Supporting Blue Plaque Parity

We have funded all of our blue plaques to date through wider arts and heritage projects. These projects celebrate women’s achievements and amplify women’s voices.

Thanks to this work, Wakefield has achieved blue plaque parity. We are the only city in the UK to have equal representation of women within the city’s blue plaque scheme. However, there is still much work to do across the wider district and beyond.

We can now offer groups, organisations, and individuals the opportunity to support and fund nominations for women they would like to see commemorated. This helps us continue our work towards greater representation of women’s history. And ensures that more remarkable women from Wakefield and District receive the recognition they deserve.

What Makes a Good Nomination?

Our particular interest is in women who made a significant contribution to the history, culture, education, community life or development of Wakefield and District.

The download below is our advice sheet. Please read this before submitting your nomination.

After reading it, if you are still unsure whether someone would be suitable, please contact us. We will be happy to discuss the nomination process with you.

Together, we can continue uncovering and celebrating the stories of the women who helped shape our communities.
